#1 Best Overall: Bose SoundLink Max Bluetooth Speaker

The Bose SoundLink Max is the latest Bose portable Bluetooth speaker released in May 2024 and is redesigned to produce exceptionally deep bass and loud sound performance. We compared this speaker to the JBL Boombox 3, JBL Charge 5 and the JBL Xtreme 4 and found that the SoundLink Max’s bass performance far surpasses these JBL speakers in terms of bass performance and depth. Compared to the Marshall Acton III speaker, we also felt that the Bose SoundLink Max delivers much deeper and enhanced bass notes that really makes bass-heavy music genres especially enjoyable to listen to. If you are looking for the best bass Bluetooth speaker for 2024 that will outperform the competition in terms of bass depth and sound quality, the Bose SoundLink Max is definitely the speaker you should get.

We have to admit that while the Bose SoundLink Max is not exactly the loudest Bluetooth speaker on this list as compared to the JBL Boombox 3 or Marshall Stanmore III speaker, the bass quality that this speaker delivers is way above par compared to the rest. Straight out of the box, the Bose SoundLink Max speaker feels extremely well-made and premium, and feels rather weighty too despite its relatively compact size. When we tested out the Bose SoundLink Max Bluetooth speaker, we were simply blown away by the level of bass depth that this speaker can deliver. Music soundtracks such as Bubble Gum by New Jeans sounded extremely punchy and crisp with really nice bass beats that were articulated with full force and depth; you can literally feel the bass on your skin and it has very nice depth. The bass on the speaker is the kind of bass that feels deep and yet not voluminous (the JBL Boombox 3 for example, delivers voluminous bass but lacks the kind of bass impact that you are looking for).

Compared to the JBL Charge 5, we would say that the Bose SoundLink Max has about the same power output at around 40W and is comparable in loudness, but we would say that the Bose SoundLink Max definitely pumps out much more enjoyable bass with greater depth. The bass on the SoundLink Max is definitely on another level – you can hear deep notes that you would only expect to hear from a subwoofer like the Sonos Sub Mini and yet it maintains crystal clear clarity in the highs and midranges. It’s a speaker that can definitely handle vocals and instrumental notes with great precision while preserving the low-end bass reverb.

The Bose SoundLink Max comes with a sturdy top handle and minimalist button controls to adjust the volume and connect Bluetooth

We have to say that we were extremely impressed by the design of the SoundLink Max speaker. The entire speaker is made from reinforced plastic and silicone which gives it a very sturdy appearance, and it maintains a simplistic design with an easy carry handle at the top. The speaker is built for durability with IP67 waterproof resistance, and comes with the latest Bluetooth 5.4 codec and a massive 20 hour battery life. That said, we did find that this speaker takes a long time to charge (around 5 hours) but it can also double as a power bank for your mobile devices if required. It supports stereo modes and SimpleSync which allows you to pair multiple Bose speakers together for a wider soundstage. Having said that, the Bose SoundLink Max lacks any built-in microphone which means you can’t use this speaker for conferencing or taking hands free calls. This speaker allows you to customize the EQ settings including the bass, midrange and treble levels using the Bose app, although we felt that the sound signature of this speaker tends to lean towards the lower-end bass spectrum even without adjustment.

The Verdict? The Bose SoundLink Max is clearly one of the best bass speakers you can find that delivers outstanding sound quality and deep high-quality bass. Despite its small size, this speaker can go very loud and pretty much the same volume output as the JBL Charge 5, but the bass response on this speaker is simply on another level – you can hear deep punchy notes and low-end frequencies that you never thought you would be hearing from a portable speaker, and EDM and rock music sounded especially fun to listen to. This speaker is quite expensive compared to other portable Bluetooth speakers, but we felt that the premium design, latest tech and really nice sound performance makes this speaker a much more worthwhile investment compared to other high-end portable speakers. We were very impressed by the deep bass performance that the SoundLink Max is capable of and highly recommend this speaker if you are looking for a speaker with great sound quality and a low-end punch.

#2 Best Volume: JBL Boombox 3 Bluetooth Speaker

JBL Boombox 3 Bluetooth Speaker

The JBL Boombox 3 is hands down one of the best bass speakers we have tested that delivers a massive 180W of peak power output and comes with its own built-in subwoofer for deeper bass. This massive speaker comes with JBL’s new and improved 3-way speaker system which includes one large subwoofer, two 3.2” midrange drivers and two 0.8” tweeters. Compared with its predecessor, the JBL Boombox 2, the JBL Boombox 3 delivers much more powerful bass and loud sound volume due to its massive peak power. When the JBL Boombox 3 is plugged into AC power, it delivers 80W on the subwoofer, 40W on the midrange drivers and 10W on both tweeters for a full-range. Like the JBL Boombox 2, the JBL Boombox 3 also comes with a built in battery that delivers 24 hours of playtime on a single charge, and is also IP67 waterproof and can be brought virtually anywhere outdoors by the pool or to the beach. The JBL Boombox 3 also comes with a sleeker and improved design with an orange silicone grip at the top handle for easy portability. It also supports JBL PartyBoost where you can link two JBL Boombox 3 speakers together in true stereo mode for a wider sound field. Overall, the JBL Boombox 3 is hands down one of the best bass speakers that delivers incredibly deep and punchy bass, and has a tonne of volume for outdoor parties and gatherings.

We were really impressed by how much bass the JBL Boombox 3 can deliver, especially when compared to the previous JBL Boombox 2 speaker. Compared with the Boombox 2, the Boombox 3 delivers deeper bass that sounds loud and punchy, with plenty of depth and substance. The bass feels tight and controlled and never bloated; you can push this speaker up to its maximum bass setting and it will still feel deep and very controlled without any muddiness. This is largely due to the Boombox 3 having its own dedicated subwoofer to handle the bass, in addition to its midrange drivers and tweeters. We also played a couple of EDM and remix music soundtracks on the Boombox 3 and they sounded really good with a good distinction between the midranges and the lower-end bass frequencies. You can hear a clear separation between the drums, electronic beats and the vocals of the artist. Although the JBL Boombox 3 has a relatively bass-leaning sound signature and feels slightly warmer, the highs and vocals were very clean and crisp, and they sounded very clear without any distortion at higher volume levels. The JBL Boombox 3 delivers consistently clear and clean sound performance at every volume level and they work especially well in outdoor settings where you can turn on the bass and volume.

One of the things to note with the JBL Boombox 3 is that it sounds louder when plugged into AC power – with a peak power output at 180W (80W from the subwoofer, 40W for the dual midrange drivers and 10W from the tweeters). When using battery power, this power output decreases to 60W for the subwoofer, 30W for the dual drivers and 8W for the tweeters. Compared with the previous JBL Boombox 2, the JBL Boombox 3 actually has a much wider frequency range from 40Hz to 20kHz, which is slightly wider than the Boombox 2’s frequency range of 50Hz to 20kHz. This means that the Boombox 3 is capable of capturing deep bass notes closer to 40Hz and deliver bass that has more depth and substance. The JBL Boombox 3 uses the latest Bluetooth 5.3 and also supports the SBC codec, but unfortunately does not support AAC or aptX Bluetooth music streaming. This is largely because the JBL Boombox 3 is geared towards delivering massive volume and bass in an outdoor setting, and is not really built for critical listening as you would expect from a high-fidelity Hi-Fi system.

Having said that, the JBL Boombox 3 retains many of the features that make it highly versatile and rugged for outdoors. It is IP67 dust and waterproof, allowing you to take the speaker virtually anywhere outdoors an in open spaces or by the poolside. The metallic frame of the JBL Boombox 3 also looks much sleeker and more robust as compared to the JBL Boombox 2, and it also comes with an orange silicon grip at the top which improves the grip and makes it more portable. You can also control the EQ settings on the Boombox 3 using the JBL app, and also use the PartyBoost feature to pair two JBL Boombox 3 speakers together for a massive sound field.

The Verdict? The JBL Boombox 3 is hands down one of the best bass speakers that delivers massive bass with its own dedicated subwoofer. The Boombox 3 comes with an upgraded 3-way speaker system with two tweeters, two midrange drivers and one dedicated subwoofer which delivers very loud and powerful bass response (up to 136W on battery and 180W on AC power). Compared with the JBL Boombox 2, the Boombox 3 is much more powerful and delivers deeper bass down to 40Hz, which makes an appreciable difference when listening to this speaker in an outdoor setting. You can also push the volume on the JBL Boombox 3 to maximum without getting any distortion; the highs, midranges and low-end still remains consistently clear. Furthermore, the JBL Boombox is IP67 waterproof and delivers up to 24 hours of playtime on a single charge at 50% volume level, making it one of the most versatile Bluetooth speakers you can find. Overall, the JBL Boombox 3 is hands down one of the best bass speakers that delivers incredible bass and volume and we highly recommend them.

The Stanmore 3 is reengineered to deliver a wider soundstage with outward facing tweeters, and you can really hear the separation in musical notes and instruments while listening to the Stanmore 3. This speaker delivers extremely crisp vocals, detailed midranges, and deep punchy bass with plenty of depth and impact. The upgraded bass-reflex port also improves the overall bass impact and you can actually feel the bass notes in some soundtracks – the bass feels tight and punchy and carries weight. Apart from the sound performance, the Stanmore 3 looks absolutely stunning with its vintage design and leatherette exterior.
